The people of Chennai are simple and hospitable. They are known to be of supporting nature in helping anyone new to the city to settle down quickly and easily by guiding them about the nitty gritties of settling down in a new place-things like gas supply, milk availability, housemaids, neighbourhood shops profile(what's good where), plumbing and carpentry needs etc. Though politically aware right down to its grass-root levels, the city of Chennai rarely sees any major upheavals which disrupt daily life.
Most people in Chennai understand English. Any newcomer to Chennai can move around if he knows even a smattering of English. Even the man who runs the smallest of grocery shops can surprise you with his knowledge of English!
As of 2001 India census, Chennai had a population of 42,16,268. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Chennai has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%.
