Language
Tamil is the lingua franca of Chennai and is understood by almost everyone. Other languages such as Telugu, Urudu and Hindi are also spoken in pockets of the city.
Most people in Chennai understand English. Any newcomer to Chennai can move around if he knows even a smattering of English. Even the man who runs the smallest of grocery shops can surprise you with his knowledge of English!
